Holistic Nurturing Health Hub supports children with neurodevelopmental challenges in Kisumu West in western Kenya with screening, community engagement, support groups, and more. On July 4, this year, the Health Hub held a medical camp to help reach more children in their communities. Cerebral Palsy Guidance was pleased to be able to contribute and help make the event a success
Medical Camp Reaches Young People in Need
One of the issues that many children with neurological and developmental conditions face in Kenya is access to services and health care. The medical camp was a day-long event bringing together professionals and families in need of services on the grounds of the Ojolla Sub-County Hospital.
Children were offered free health services from specialists, including dental care, physical, occupational, and speech therapies, health screenings, and assistive device fittings. Parents and caregivers were offered support services, information, and resources.
Screenings at events like the medical camp are particularly important for children and families in the area. The specialists who came together to meet with families were able to screen children for cerebral palsy, autism spectrum disorders, sickle cell anemia, epilepsy, and developmental conditions, all at no cost. Early screenings are essential for ensuring children get effective treatments and therapies as soon as possible.
Other Holistic Nurturing Health Hub Projects
The medical camp outreach is just one of several projects and programs the Health Hub offers to families and children in Kisumu West. The Hub regularly offers early screenings to help identify neurological, developmental, and other conditions in young children.
Children can also benefit from personalized physical and occupational therapy programs, especially helpful for those diagnosed with mobility issues, like cerebral palsy. Community workshops educate parents and caregivers about neurodevelopmental disorders. They also provide caregivers with much-needed resources and training to help them provide better care.
Support groups run through the Health Hub are also helpful for parents and caregivers. These groups allow them to connect with other adults and build a sense of community while also sharing information and resources.
In addition to direct care and education, the Health Hub advocates on behalf of children and families. The group invests in research that will help change the future for these vulnerable children.
